做公立国际高中的常春藤,究竟拼的是什么?(What is the superiority of public international high school IVY?)

Students were given the opportunity to test out their knowledge of statistics by constructing simple experiments. The statistics project is just one of many that will take place this year in order to have the students get a real-world understanding of this highly practical course material.

开学不久,我收到AP统计学老师Mr. Ramsey的邀约,他答应学生如果统计学实验做得漂亮,就会请一位special guest(特殊嘉宾)到课堂,而我就是那个特殊嘉宾。对我来说,听课很常见,作为客座学生坐在学生中间还是第一次。我欣然前往。

这节课大部分是11年级的学生,Ted演讲视频导入,话题是金钱能否买来快乐。为了得出结论人们做了不同的统计实验,综合这些实验结果得出,如果把金钱花在别人身上更能带来快乐,所以从某种意义上来说,金钱是可以买来快乐的。包括我这个客座学生在内,每个人都记录着视频中的相关学科数据,如response, treatment, effectiveness,一面和老师探讨整个实验和分析过程的知识点,一面饶有兴致的回味着这段金钱与快乐的对话。

接下来是学生实验演示环节,初涉统计学的同学们在课前就已两两分组,设计好了实验并且将实验介绍发给了老师审核,这次终于可以检验一下自己设计的实验的可操作性和可行性,大家紧张之余都有些迫不及待。每当一组实验员走上台,剩下的同学自然成为实验对象,介绍实验,现场对实验对象进行分组,实验操作,收集和分析数据,现场汇报实验结论。价位不同的矿泉水,饮用时真的口感有异吗?听了欢快和悲伤的音乐后,情绪会影响到对相同事情的判断吗?主观上对自己拼写能力的预期和实际操完成拼写的差距到底有多大?同样一段文字,仅仅读文本和配合视频对白,对于记忆的刺激真的有区别吗?音乐、视频、耳机、水杯、图片......配合不同的道具,一个又一个妙趣横生的实验依次登场。

有的组江湖经验丰富配合默契,英文介绍清晰明了,实验进行得从容不迫,有的组成员的口语并不出众,有的组成员性格内向,但任务就是任务不能含糊,来一个深呼吸,尽可能组织好语言,确保实验能按预期有序进行,这节课的小目标就算实现了。等等,一切按部就班,为啥最后的数据分析显示和预期完全不一样呢?大数据时代,用科学终结主观主义和经验主义,这恐怕也是统计学课堂想传递给大家的吧。

两节课时光飞逝而过,而我这个客座学生还有些恋恋不舍。只是一堂普普通通的AP统计学,却让我心生羡慕,羡慕那些能每节课坐在这样课堂的学生,羡慕他们能在这样的年纪被这样地激发潜力,羡慕他们即使不够完美也充满自信。充分有效的课前预习,考验人创造力,合作力,表达力,组织力,探究力和批判性思维的课堂设计,最好的资源、机遇和平台就在每一天的每节课上。

Statistics Class ExperimentsIntroduction

Students were given the opportunity to test out their knowledge of statistics by constructing simple experiments. While working in groups of 2 or 3 students, a simple trial was created in order to test their classmates memory, heart rates, sense of taste, among other reactions. Prior to their demonstrations, each group wrote a presentation explaining what variables they were testing and what results they anticipated. Students were expected to come up with two different conclusions in order to cover a variety of outcomes.

The experiments lasted for about 5 minutes, with students participating following the experimenter’s instructions and the experimenter collecting data. Following the experiment, data was compiled and then presented and compared to the predictions submitted in their proposals. One experiment of note was conducted by 2 seniors, Ann and Rebecca, who had participants try to recall words in both written form and after seeing a movie clip. The results of this experiment were incredibly similar, which wasn’t what I expected as well. We have all had conversations with someone where either they or we claimed that the other person said something. Did that exact quote really take place? Or did we just think it did? I think this experiment shows that this type of memory is harder to come by than you might expect.

The statistics project is just one of many that will take place this year in order to have the students get a real-world understanding of this highly practical course material. We look forward to inviting other members of the school community in to observe future projects.


曾几何时国际教育还是一个颇为高大上的词儿,随着国际学校和公立国际高中的日益兴起,几年的时间似乎就已经飞入寻常百姓家了,等趟地铁就能看见穿着某中校服,抱着本托福词汇书的孩子,讨论着要报个精英计划还是冲刺班。不知不觉中,出国留学被简单粗暴地拆分成了刷分和找人包装申排名。然而真正的教育作为一种持续性立体化的全人培养,是落在实处的每一节课,每一次活动,每一天面对面的师生互动,和每分钟与同龄人的相互激励。AP课程考试的官方组织者College Board始终在强调开设AP课程,以学年为周期学习过程的重要性,因为对于学生而言,最有意义的不仅是一个5分,而是受益终身的学科学习能力。

专注每一节常态课,引领学生积蓄可持续的终身学习的能力,让他们的海外求学成为另一段精彩人生的开始,做公立国际高中的常春藤,免不了要拼配置和数据,我们更愿意看到的是一个又一个师生共享教学乐趣的课堂,并用这样的课堂编织出充实的当下,美好的未来!愿与同行共勉。
